When I
arrived as the new Assistant Director in Charge of the Los
Angeles Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Office in
2005, I was aware of the tremendous challenges facing the
region, particularly the evolving threat of terrorism and
resurgent violent criminal activity. I was also prepared to
confront the typical bureaucratic and personality problems
that law enforcement leaders often face when coordinating a
situation involving multiple agencies seeking a common goal.

was soon arraigned for allegedly enforcing the law in a
reckless manner. Fortunately, he was later acquitted, as he
had acted in self-defense....

The Past: The 9-11 Commission Report
details the radio communication travesty of September 11, 2001.
Once officers knew that the towers were beginning to fall, they
attempted to notify other public safety personnel inside the
buildings. Tragically, the officers were unable to warn
firefighters and others because they could not access the other
agencies' radio channels. They stood by helplessly and watched
in horror as the World Trade Center Towers collapsed....

members of the Traffic Committee to develop, maintain and
expand the Committee Membership to further develop
camaraderie and teamwork among all law enforcement agencies
and traffic safety organizations throughout Los Angeles
County. A component of the traffic committee is the Avoid
the 40 Program.
